Organizing the product catalog for the eCommerce store with Odoo
Create the product
Let us learn to create our first product in Odoo.
The user selects the website application and the product icon. Then, the product is given a name, such as a T-shirt, and saved. Now, customize by changing the sales price and description, modifying terms and conditions, and uploading the product image. There is an option to share the product on social media. The share button can be used to do this. This option can be removed or modified based on the requirement. There is also an option to customize further by adding a rating button.
More blocks and descriptions can be added based on the user’s requirements. For example, if the customer needs to know the steps, they can be added accordingly. Once all the required elements are in place, Publish and start selling.
Set up the Product variants and stock availability for the eCommerce Store
Once the first product is set up and sold, the next task is to manage the stocks by adding more product variants in different colors and sizes. The Attributes & Variants tab can help us do this.
Attributes refer to product characteristics, such as color or material. Variants are different combinations of attributes. The Attributes and Variants option is available under the Website—eCommerce—Products tab.
For this, we can go to the website application, go to settings, select the product variant option, and save it. Now, the variants option is activated on the homepage. Go to the Attributes and Variants option to add size and colors, add separate images, and customize the price for each color.
Under attributes, we can add features like size and color. The values corresponding to size can be selected as S, M, L, XL, and XXL. Based on the requirement, the following attribute can be Colour, and the values can be blue or green. Now, photos can be uploaded for each of the attribute combinations. The price of a specific item can be incremented or decremented based on the requirement.
Under the sales tab, we can display messages like “product out of stock,” “few items left below a certain value,” and “on hand available product message.”
Catalog categories
To improve customers’ browsing experience, we can enable options like wishlist and product comparison. If one product needs to be highlighted, we can add the on-sale badge.
Pricing
Odoo offers different options for the price list strategy. To activate the pricelist option in the website application, go to the advanced price rules section. Advanced price rules give discounts and formula options. A promo code can also be created here.

Cart Checkout
Many options are available here, like the add to cart button, after which the customer can stay on the product page or go to the cart. There is also a buy now button. A digital content button will give customers a product-specific link or downloadable content on the checkout process confirmation page if the payment goes through. To do so, attach some content to a product using the New Files button and publish it.
There are also options to add extra steps at the checkout and to re-order from the portal. All the available options can be customized based on the customer’s requirements. Customers can either proceed to check out or continue shopping from the cart. If the customer wishes to get their products only on specific days, that can also be done.
Shipping & payment providers
Customers can choose from various shipping and payment options, which can be enabled based on the business owner’s requirements. Under this option, customers can add a shipping address different from their customer’s address, select pick-up sites, and add delivery charges. Odoo allows you to configure payment providers of your choice based on their availability in each country. Each customer can save payment options.
Checkout policy and payment portal
The customers can either sign in or order as guest customers by filling in the address. If the owner wants to allow only B2B customers, they can grant portal access and proceed with it. The customer portal can also be configured and shared with them.

Order management
There are three order stages: quotation, quotation sent, and sales order. Each step represents a different process in eCommerce. A quotation is an item that was added to the cart, but the customer still needs to check out. In Odoo, we can identify these customers and follow up to encourage them to finalize their purchase. The quotation sent stage is when the customer has gone through the payment process but has yet to be confirmed. This event happens when they make a wire order or collect the product in person at the store.
When the order reaches the sales order stage, the payment has been confirmed. This information can enhance the overall customer experience and the order management process. We can notify the salesperson or team at the checkout stage. Email marketing can also be enabled for abandoned cart orders, and email and SMS confirmations can be activated for each delivery. The order return options can also be enabled here.
Selling strategies
Sales strategies can be cross-selling and upselling. Cross-selling refers to recommending additional items that complement the customer’s original purchase. Upselling focuses on presenting higher-end or upgraded product versions. The sales tab for each product includes options for both cross-selling and upselling. Alternative products or optional products can be enabled by adding the respective blocks.
Gift cards, loyalty programs, and e-wallets
A loyalty program for loyal customers can be started. The points they receive for each purchase can later be redeemed for rewards. This process will entice them to come back and improve customer retention. Along with this, gift cards and e-wallet programs can be started. The discounts, loyalty, and gift card options can be activated from website applications – configuration – settings tab. Each option will appear in the eCommerce tab and can be customized based on the needs. For example, the loyalty cards option can be selected, and you may fix its validity if required. The rewards can be free products, free shipping, or discounts.
Similarly, gift cards can be generated with all the relevant information, such as the quantity, value, validity period, and for whom the gift card is generated.
